Whilst recognising that everyone’s experience of an inspection is different, Simon Potten, headteacher at Oakwood School in Horley will share valuable tips and ideas on how to make the process as positive and useful as possible. As a Senior Leader in secondary education for 18 years, Simon has experienced various Ofsted inspections in a variety of different contexts and settings.

Simon intends to run an interactive, informative and, at times, light-hearted workshop from which everyone can take away top tips on how to survive the new Ofsted inspection process. There will be an opportunity to discuss different approaches, hear some real-life case-studies and ask questions to address any worries and allay any fears and misconceptions that you may have.

Having listened to many colleagues’ experiences from around the country, Simon is confident that his experience will not only serve to clarify what needs to be done to prepare for inspection but also to reassure you that the process, when managed well, is not so bad after all.

About your workshop leader:

Simon Potten is currently serving as Headteacher of Oakwood School in Horley, Surrey - an 11-16 Secondary School of approximately 1000 students.

Simon has been a qualified teacher for 29 years (his original subjects being French and PE) and has worked in a variety of secondary schools in vastly different settings. His career has spanned from working in affluent secondary schools through to being a part of a team to help take a school out of Special Measures, having been listed as the 16th worst school in the country, prior to his arrival, by the Labour government in power at the time!!

Simon has been a Senior Leader in schools for 18 years and Oakwood School is his second headship, having previously embarked on a headship at Robertsbridge Community College in East Sussex. He has led the two schools to improved outcomes and standards, with successful Ofsted inspections whereby both schools gained solid “good” gradings. He was delighted to leave Robertsbridge as one of the top 10% most improved schools for progress nationally. Oakwood has enjoyed similar success in recent years with a four year rising trend in student progress and outcomes measures.
